If you have a 60gb ps3 it does have backwards compatibility so it lets you play ps2 and p1 games. un fortunately the 60gb ps3 was discontinued in early 2008. The newer models of the ps3 do not have backwards compatibilty because it saves sony money to not put it in.

You were right, it is a stupid question. Of course you can't. For a start the PS2 doesn't have a BluRay player so can't read the discs. The PS2 has a DVD drive so can only run DVDs (PS2 games/ films/ etc...) and CDs (PS1 games/ music/ etc...). Considering the PS2 is about £150 cheaper than the PS3, if it could play PS3 games the PS3 would be obsolete.

Unfortunantly no you can't a ps3 uses different technology to play the games so you cant use the ps2 to play ps3 games, also the graphics and video and audio card in the ps2 would not be advanced enough for ps3 games, it is similar to using a microsoft office 2007 document on a 1998 version of office it just doesn't work, now you can use older versions of microsoft office on the 2007 version same with the older ps3 you could play ps2 games on there but i believe they took that function out in the recent ones.

No, you can not. It's not a stupid question, if you are unsure, that's why you ask. You learn by asking. Blu-Ray and DVD are two different technologies, but are extremely alike, which can confuse people. A disk is read using a laser, working at a certain wavelength. Using the wrong disk in the wrong reader can damage both disk and reader. A DVD uses a red laser, working at a wavelength of 650 nanometers. A Blu-Ray uses a voilet-blue laser, working at 405nm. It is because of the smaller wavelength that a Blu-Ray disk can hold as much information as it does. So short answer, a PS2 can not read a PS3 game, and a PS3 game may even damage your PS2. A PS3 is equipped with both technologies, so a PS2 game could be read by a PS3, but most PS3s do not have the software to load and play a PS2 game, that software is commonly called Backward Compatibility.
